Email scam to watch out for
Just when you thought you knew how to avoid online scams, fraudsters have gotten trickier—and more convincing. Many of them have started to send emails impersonating people we know.
One recent email scam came from someone we know at ACRA and from their email address, and the email reads “Do you have a moment I have a request I need you to handle discreetly. I am going into a meeting soon no calls so just reply to my Mail” when replied to (keep in mind the email address READS its from the person they know, the response was “Here’s what I want you to do for me because I’m a little busy right now. I aimed at surprising some of our diligent team members with gift cards. This should be Confidential until they all have the gift cards as it’s a surprise and you will keep one for yourself too. Can you get this done? and how soon”
Although this could sound legit the next email did ask for a CRAZY dollar amount to be spent and asked for a photo of the scratched back of the cards. Our member then knew this was not legit.
ACRA asks that our members remain vigilant.
When you feel something is a miss, just right-click on the sender’s email address and you’ll soon see if it’s legit or just pick up the phone and call the suspected sender.
