WA- Registration of building engineers: taking your feedback on board

The WA Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety reports that registration of building engineers in WA is scheduled to commence on 1 July 2024 with a two-year transition period.

The registration scheme is expected to involve more than 1,000 civil, structural, mechanical and fire safety engineers working in the building industry.

Registration will provide greater accountability and consistency of engineering services while improving public safety and consumer protection, as well as increasing professional recognition of building engineers.

Extensive consultation included a public comment period about the amendment regulations. This feedback resulted in changes to the definition of building engineering work, adding membership of a professional standards scheme, a prescribed title for engineering contractors and amending experience requirements for engineering practitioners.

These changes align WA’s registration framework more closely with requirements in other Australian jurisdictions, to facilitate mutual recognition.

Registration of building engineers in WA is scheduled to commence on 1 July 2024.
